The team has all arrived and we’re really enjoying getting to know each other as we gear up for our first jungle outing. Thursday was busy with all the jungle prep – packing, pharmacy readiness, water filter prep, tracking down jungle bedding, team training, etc, etc. While there is a massive amount of moving parts to get a team ready to head out, the day went as well as possible and all the work was done in time to make a short trip into town for a late authentic Mexican taco dinner at the exceptional Meson Del Taco. Dinner can be summed up in one word: YUM!

Friday we loaded early and drove a few hours to our first village in the Ch’ol area where we will be working for the next few days. We picked up three Spanish-Ch’ol translators on the way who stayed with us and worked with us in every village. Though we started out as strangers, we quickly became friends and were sad to see them go at the end of our time out there. We were housed for the night by two Ch’ol families and enjoyed their generous hospitality. Hammocks were hung, Thermarests inflated, dinner cooked and cleaned up, fellowship enjoyed, and soon we were being lullabied to sleep by the roosters, chickens, turkeys, dogs, geckos, rats, and crickets that serenade us throughout each night. 🙂
