Destinations: San Cristobal, Tuxtla – Zoomat, Sumidero Canyon

On Tuesday most of us were able to hit the Tutxla zoo. Not only did we see and admire the interesting creations of the birds and the patterns of the jaguar, but we were also able to marvel at the fun God must have had doing it. Have you ever wondered why He painted the creatures and the earth with the colors He did? Have you ever wondered how many things were necessary to survive life, and how many things were just made for fun? For God’s fun? For ours?

20110614-img_1292So many times our lives are spent rushing through activities, going from one thing to the next. But stop a minute. Stop and ponder your Maker. I’ve had to be reminded many times that He is waiting to spend time with me. Always waiting. And I don’t always do it. But He so wants the fellowship of my company and yours. Be still.

After the zoo, we went on an excursion to the Sumidero Canyon. A couple hours of boat riding in a vast expanse of canyon walls gave us the chance to stare 1200 meters high and know that the water was 200 meters deep beneath us at some points – a total of…a lot. Because rainy season began not long before we arrived there were no waterfalls to get us wet this time. However, the sheer wonder of it all caused us to be quiet. There were other things too. One point in the trip found us all whipping out our cameras to capture the sight of a bunch of baby crocodiles basking in the sun. Yikes! How many more does that make once they’re big?!

20110614-img_1315All in all, it was a wonderful day. An out-of-the-ordinary experience that gives a good reality check with God. It was a great chance to remember that working is not the only thing that fulfills our lives. It’s God alone.

“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” Romans 1:20

– Mandy, for the team

P.S. Tuesday began as a very early day, for a very sad reason. About 4 of us went to the airport because a very special person on our team had to leave and get back to facing the homefront where there’s work and regular life. Laura Frahm is very much missed and appreciated here. But we are all very glad to have spent 10 days with her! Thanks Laura!
